World's first flying robotic bird

Festo corporation has developed the world's first flying robotic bird, called SmartBird™!

They have successfully reproduced a bird's smooth and "effortless" beating of the wings. The robot imitates the bird's form and flying pattern so well that you can easily mistaken it for a real bird in the sky when you look at it. This is due to its incredible aerodynamic qualities and agility.

The robot has the shape similar to that of a seagull, and its wings beat up and down, as well as twist at specific angles, which is made possible with help from an active articulated torsional drive unit that controls the whole system while offering outstanding flight efficiency.
