Census in India: the population reached 1.21 billion

India's latest census data shows that the population has increased by 181 million people over the last decade, according to BBC.

The population in India has topped the 1.2 billion mark, as much as the United States, Indonesia, Brazil and Bangladesh combined.

2.5 million officials have collected information in about 7,000 cities and 600,000 villages.

The census, conducted every ten years, began in 2010 and has been a very difficult process. Those who were responsible for gathering data were confronted with widespread illiteracy, millions homeless, Maoist insurgents and other rebels who have turned large areas of the country in very dangerous zones.
